Another Gilbert Success in San Sebastian

In winning the 2011 Clasica San Sebastian, Belgian national champion Philippe Gilbert showed us why he is possibly the best rider of the year. After riding carefully and using his teammates to monitor the race for the first 230km, Gilbert attacked from a small leading group and crossed the line alone. This victory is the 14th in Gilbert's fine season so far.

The Clasica San Sebastian ranges for 234km across the hot, sunny Basque countryside. Two major climbs of the Jaizkibel climb helped to sort the group, but there were still 30 riders together after the last ascent. As the finish drew closer, multiple attacks fractured the bunch before Carlos Barredo (Rabobank) managed to secure a 10 second advantage just 3km from the line. But Gilbert exploded across the gap and didn't even pause to rest before surging alone to the finish line.

Congratulations to Phil and his team on what has proven to be one of the strongest winning seasons in years.
