Farrar scores first Tour stage win

American sprinter Tyler Farrar of the Garmin-Cervelo team delivered one of the biggest wins of his career in stage three of the Tour de France. He made a powerful sprint in the final 100 meters to take victory in front of Vacansoleil's Romain Feillu and Movistar's José Joaquín Rojas. The victory was especially sweet coming on July 4th (Independence Day in the United States), and coming after a difficult spring for Farrar.

The 172 km Stage 3 of the Tour de France ran from Lorient to Mur-de-Bregagne on mostly flat roads. The HTC-Highroad team, a strong rival to Farrar’s Garmin-Cervelo team, did most of the work to reel in the day’s early break and set up a leadout for their sprinter Mark Cavendish. But their train derailed in the last 1km and Garmin riders were perfectly placed to take over.

Thor Hushovd, wearing the yellow jersey, poured everything into a perfect leadout for Farrar, who said, “It's a little bit of a special situation with Thor in yellow and the priority was for him to stay in yellow because the last thing we wanted was for a time gap." Farrar continued, "It just shows what a champion Thor is and how classy he is. A world champion in the yellow jersey doesn't have to lead out the sprint for a teammate, but I just can't say thank you enough to him and the whole team.”

Crossing the line in first, Farrar made a “W” sign to honor his close friend Wouter Weylandt who died after a crash in the Giro d’Italia.
