Gilbert takes first yellow jersey of 2011

The Tour de France started with a victory for Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto), adding another achievement to his outstanding season so far. After sweeping the Ardennes classics in April, he won the Belgian national road championships last weekend. Now, in his first race wearing the colors of the Belgian flag, he’s scored another huge win and takes the yellow jersey reserved for the leader of the Tour.

Stage One of the Tour was marked by a day-long breakaway of three riders. Gilbert’s team worked to control the gap, then increased the pace in the last 20km. A huge crash split the field as the pace increased, but the Omega Pharma-Lotto team kept the pressure on up front and kept Gilbert away from trouble. As the gradient increased in the final 2km, Gilbert answered a blistering attack by Fabian Cancellara (Leopard-Trek) and then struck out on his own for the final 750 meters. Crossing the line alone he kissed his Belgian champion jersey and prepared to take yellow by just three seconds over Cadel Evans (BMC Racing).
